Grit indicates coarseness: 80 grit is extra coarse for artificial nails and heavy shaping, 100 grit is coarse for artificial nail work, 150 grit is medium for general shaping, 180 grit is universal for both natural and artificial nails, 240 grit is fine for smoothing and pre-coating prep, and 400/3000 grit is for polishing. For natural nails, always use 180 grit or higher to avoid damage. For artificial nails or acrylics, 80-150 grit files work best.

Standard straight nail files (SMART 21 series) are narrower and ideal for precise shaping of the free edge and detailed nail work. Broad straight files (SMART 31 series) have a wider filing surface that covers more area per stroke, making them faster for overall nail shaping and more efficient for pedicure work. Both types feature the same high-quality mineral abrasive and foam cushion layer — the choice comes down to the filing surface width you prefer.

Disposable mineral nail files (sold in packs of 5 or 25) are designed for single-client use — dispose of them after each service for maximum hygiene. Laser nail files and reusable metal files should be cleaned with a brush after each client, disinfected with a salon-grade solution, and sterilised via autoclave or dry heat oven. Store all files in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve the abrasive surface.
